AU football team picked third in preseason Empire 8 poll
ALFRED, NY -- The Alfred University football team was chosen third in the 2013 Empire 8 Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll, released by the conference today.
Alfred earned 35 points in coaches’ survey. Salisbury earned the top spot with 49 points and seven first-place votes, while St. John Fisher received 43 points and one first-place vote to get the second spot.
Alfred was followed by Buffalo State and Ithaca, which each earned 28 points to tie for fourth; Utica was sixth with 20 points; Frostburg State was seventh with 14 points; and Hartwick was picked eighth, earning seven points.
Alfred finished second in the conference standings last season with a 5-2 league record (6-4 overall). The Saxons return 12 starters from that squad: eight on offense, three on defense, and one specialist.
AU begins its season with three non-league games -- home against RPI Sept. 14 and Montclair State Sept. 21 and at Brockport State Sept. 28 – before beginning its seven-game Empire 8 slate. AU is at home against Buff State (Oct. 5), Hartwick (Oct. 19), Salisbury (Nov. 2) and Utica (Nov. 9); and on the road against Ithaca (Oct. 12), Frostburg (Oct. 26) and St. John Fisher (Nov. 16).
