AU volleyball team rebounds at Cazenovia Tournament

CAZENOVIA, NY — The Alfred University volleyball team rebounded from two losses Friday at the Cazenovia College Blue and Gold Classic Tournament, taking a pair of matches in Saturday’s consolation round to even its 2013 record at 2-2.


The Saxons opened Saturday’s play with a 3-2 victory over Gwynedd Mercy, then stopped Bryn Athyn by a 3-1 score.


Senior Chelsea Hall (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) paced the Saxons in the win over Gwynedd Mercy with 12 kills, 13 digs and a pair of block, while senior Paige Jensen (Weiser, ID/Weiser) had 11 kills, five digs, two blocks and two service aces.


Junior Samantha Woood (Newfield, NY/Newfield) had seven kills and six blocks; senior Kellie Hughson (Albion, NY/Charles D’Amico) had 13 digs and three aces; senior Tara Barone (Derby, NY/Lake Shore) had 30 assists  and nine digs; and freshman Core’ Oppliger (Neuchatel, Switzerland/Lyce Jean-Peaget) had four kills, four digs, three blocks and three aces.


In the win over Bryn Athyn, Jensen led the Saxons with 11 kills, seven digs and two blocks, and Hall had nine kills and four digs.


Senior Janelle Gallipeau (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) had 38 assists and two blocks; Wood had six kills and five blocks; freshman Mary Lou Patnaude (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) had five kills and a pair of blocks; junior Taylor Kiernan (Patchogue, NY/Patchogue-Medford) had 19 digs and three aces; Oppliger had seven kills and three blocks; and senior Kelsey Brand (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) had four blocks.


AU is in action next on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6 and 7, at the Keuka College Tournament.
