AU women’s tennis team opens season with win over Houghton
ALFRED, NY — The Alfred University women’s tennis team opened its 2013 season with an 8-1 victory over visiting Houghton College Friday.
Alfred swept the singles matches, getting victories from junior Brennan Ferguson (Destrechan, LA/Ursuline), 6-2, 6-2 in first singles; sophomore Emma Jackson (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville), 6-1, 6-0 in second singles; sophomore Rachel Cook (Youngstown, OH/Laurel Springs), 6-0, 6-0 in third singles; junior Emily Eisenberg (Oyster Bay, NY/Oyster Bay), 6-1, 6-1 in fourth singles; freshman Alexandra Smith (Watertown, NY/Watertown), 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 in fifth singles; and senior Bethany Dickerson (Alma, NY/Wellsville), 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 in sixth singles.
The Saxons took two of three doubles matches. Jackson and Cook won first doubles, 8-2, while Ferguson and Eisenberg claimed an 8-1 decision in second doubles.
AU is in action next on Wednesday, Sept. 4, at 4 p.m. at Brockport.
