Huge second-half rally gives AU football team overtime win at Brockport
BROCKPORT,NY– The Alfred University football team rallied from a four-touchdown deficit to defeat host Brockport, 34-28, in overtime Saturday night.
Down 28-0 at the half, the Saxons scored 14 points in each of the final two quarters to tie the game at 28-28. After stopping Brockport on the host team’s first possession of overtime, the Saxons scored the game-winning points on a 21-yard TD pass from freshman quarterback Tyler Johnson (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) to senior wide receiver Jonathan Ruffin (Copiague, NY/Copiage) on the Saxons’ second play of the extra session.
With the non-league win, AU improves to 2-1 as the Saxons prepare to begin their seven-game Empire 8 Conference slate next weekend against visiting Buffalo State.
Alfred’s comeback started on the Saxons’ second drive of the second half. After a Brockport punt gave AU possession at its own 26-yard line, Johnson – inserted after intermission for starting QB Dominic Scavo (Hornell, NY/Hornell) – ran 74 yards for a touchdown on the Saxons’ first play from scrimmage, making the score 28-7 with 5:18 left in the third.
On Brockport's next possession, AU sophomore cornerback Calvin Bain (Rochester,NY/East) intercepted a Ty Stoldt pass at the Alfred 30 and returned the ball 70 yards for a touchdown to draw AU within 14 points, at 28-14, with just under four minutes left in the third.
Johnson added his second TD run of the game, a seven-yard scamper with 12:11 left in the fourth, and after the Saxons’ PAT attempt failed, Brockport led 28-20. After forcing a Brockport punt on the Golden Eagles’ ensuing possession, the Saxons took over at their own 23-yard line with 11:03 remaining. On Alfred’s first play from scrimmage, senior wideout David Lee Tack (Newark,NY/Newark) tossed a pass to senior wide receiver Josh Phillips (Syracuse,NY/WestGenesee) that went for 58 yards to the Brockport 19. Two plays later, senior tailback Tyler DeRosa (MillerPlace,NY/Miller Place) scored on a 17-yard run. Johnson’s two-point conversion pass to senior tight end Alec Ladonis (Nescopeck,PA/Berwick) knotted the game at 28-28 with just under 10 minutes left in regulation.
Each team had a chance to win in regulation, but missed potential game-winning field goals – Brockport from 35 yards with 2:23 left, and AU from 22 yards as time expired in the fourth.
Alfred finished with 499 yards of offense, while Brockport produced 387. Johnson had a monster game, rushing for 134 yards on 15 carries, with two touchdowns, and completed 11 of 17 passes for 157 yards – all in one half of play. DeRosa ran for 39 yards and Phillips had six catches for 167 yards. Sophomore tight end Isiah Young (Groton,NY/Groton) added four catches for 56 yards and Ruffin had two for 49.
AU intercepted Stoldt three times. In addition to Bain’s pick, AU senior cornerback Andre McCloud (Bath,NY/Haverling) and freshman nose guard Zack Bacon (Hornell,NY/Hornell) also had interceptions. Senior end Fred Langenstein (Pittsford,NY/Pittsford) and sophomore middle linebacker Corry Wallace (Mastic Beach,NY/Longwood) led the AU defense with nine tackle each. Sophomore tackle Zach Brinkley (Brockway,PA/Brockway) had eight tackles and junior outside linebacker Justin Liberta (Hamburg,NY/Frontier) had six.
Alfred plays next weekend, on Homecoming, at 1 p.m. against visiting Buff State.
