AU’s Johnson named Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week
ALFRED, NY — AU freshman quarterback Tyler Johnson (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa) has been named Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week.
Johnson was honored for his play in the Saxons’ stunning 34-28 overtime win at Brockport on Saturday night. Inserted into the lineup at the start of the third-quarter with AU down 28-0, Johnson ignited the Saxons’ rally with a 74-yard touchdown run with 5:18 left in the period.
He added a seven-yard run in the fourth to draw AU to within one score, at 28-20. The Saxons would tie the game later in the quarter and the contest went to overtime. After Brockport failed to score on their opening possession of overtime, Johnson hit senior wide receiver Jonathan Ruffin (Copiague, NY/Copiague) on a 21-yard game-winning TD pass on the Saxons’ second play from scrimmage.
Johnson completed 11 of 17 passes for 157 yards and a touchdown. He also ran 15 times for 134 yards and two scores as the Saxons’ improved to 2-1 on the season. Alfred plays next on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 1 p.m. when the Saxons play their Empire 8 opener against Buffalo State on Homecoming.
