Campus community going 'Passionately Pink for the Cure'

This October marks the sixth year that Alfred University (AU) students, faculty, and staff are going “Passionately Pink for the Cure” in a month-long fight against breast cancer. 

October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month at the University and across the country, will include multiple events designed to raise funds for research and/or awareness of breast cancer, a disease which is developed by one in eight American women.

The public is invited to get in on the fun, Friday, Oct. 4 from 6-9 p.m. in the McLane Center, for the third annual Zumbathon event “Kickin’ It Up for the Cure.” Campus and community participants with find eight instructors, a DJ, and special lights at this night-time event.  Adult tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door; student tickets are $5. Proceeds will benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Students and staff will kick off “Passionately Pink” events earlier in the day when they have are invited to have a photo taken with “Little Pink” from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Brick (Residence Hall) lawn. The AU Equestrian Teams are asking for a $1 donation for the photo opportunity with the pink pony. Also Friday, the annual “Pink Picture” will be taken at 12:20 p.m. on the softball field. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to wear their “best pink” and take part in the photo shoot.

On Thursday, Oct. 10 from 7-9 p.m. in Ade Dining Hall Lobby the Campus Life Council will hold the second annual “Pretty in Pink” program, headed by Passionately Pink Committee member and Campus Life Council President Megan Healy. The public is invited to attend this pink party, which will feature games, desserts, a photo booth, manicures, and pink hair extensions done by Barb from Barb’s Creative Hair. 

In addition, many AU athletic teams will each be sponsoring a home “Pink Out” sporting event in which athletes will wear pink accessories such as shoelaces, wristbands, and swim caps. Pink Out events include women’s tennis, Friday, Oct. 4 at 4 p.m.; varsity football on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m.; men’s soccer on Oct. 5 at 6 p.m.; volleyball on Oct. 12 at a11 a.m.; women’s soccer on Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.; JV football on Oct. 27 at 1 p.m.; and swimming and diving on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m.

Passionately Pink t-shirts of various designs will be on sale throughout the month in the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Powell Campus Center, open Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-5 p.m.; Friday 9 a.m-4 p.m.; Saturday noon-4 p.m.; and Sunday noon-3 p.m. Shirts will also be on sale Monday-Friday in Ade Dining Hall Lobby from noon-1 p.m.
