AU swimming and diving teams open seasons at Nazareth
PITTSFORD, NY — The Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams opened their 2013-14 seasons at Nazareth on Saturday.
The Alfred men’s team came away with a 131-99 victory, while Naz beat the AU women, 128-106.
The Saxon men’s team got two individual event wins from juniors David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint). Coombes took the 100-meter freestyle (54.28) and 200-meter freestyle (2:03.33) and Toth won the 100-meter butterfly (1:01.08) and 200-meter individual medley (2:1q5.49).
Other event winners for the Saxons were: junior Joe Rogers (Dublin, NH) in the 800-meter freestyle (9:22.75) and senior Pete Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) in the 50-meter freestyle (24.27).
The Saxons won both relays. Coombes, junior Jeff Rowland (Rochester, NY/Hilton), Toth and junior David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) took the 20-meter medley relay (1:52.76) and Luke, sophomore Sheldon Vosburgh (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie), Rogers and Sowinski won the 40-meter free relay (3:48.07).
The members of the AU women’s team earned two individual event wins: sophomore Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR), freshman Dylan Staniszewski (Oakton, VA/Oakton) and senior Cassie Brown (Canisteo, NY/Canisteo-Greenwood).
Watson won the 200-meter individual medley (2:36.23) and 100-meter butterfly (1:10.66); Staniszewski took the 200-meter freestyle (2:18.13) and 400-meter freestyle (4:48.69); and Brown swept the diving events, scoring 211.19 on the 3-meter board and 197.55 on the 1-meter board.
Junior Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) was Alfred’s other event winner, taking the 100-meter backstroke in 1:11.29.
The team of Behr, freshman Kylee Proudfit (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Catholic), Watson and sophomore Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon) won the 200-meter medley relay (2:08.82).
Alfred’s men’s and women’s teams are in action next on Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at RIT.
