Fredonia sweeps AU swimming and diving teams

FREDONIA, NY – Host SUNY Fredonia swept dual meets from the visiting Alfred University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams Friday evening. The AU men lost, 140-97, and the Saxon women fell, 150-84.


Juniors David Coombes (Dansville, NY/Dansville) and Zac Toth (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) each had two wins for the Saxon men (1-2). Coombes won the 200 freestyle (1:48.43) and 100 backstroke (55.42); Toth took the 200 individual medley (2:03.64) and 100 butterfly (54.99).


Senior Peter Sowinski (Akron, NY/Akron) won the 100 freestyle (48.71) for the Saxons’ other individual event win. Junior Joseph Rogers (Dublin, NH) was second in the 1,650 freestyle (18:05.45) and 500 free (5:09.99), while junior David Luke (Ocala, FL/West Port) was second in the 50 free (22.16).


The team of Luke, freshman Patrick Brown (Olean, NY/Olean), Coombes and Sowinski won the 200 free relay (1:28.17); Toth, seniors Terry Soto (Mt. Morris, NY/Mt. Morris) and Jake Giglio (Hornell, NY/Hornell) and Luke took second in the 200 medley relay.


Sophomore Carly Watson (Hyde Park, NY/FDR) won the 200 individual medley (2:18.93) and 100 butterfly (1:00.63) to pace the AU women (1-3). Junior Chrissy Behr (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional), in the 50 free (25.71), and freshman Dylan Staniszewski (Oakton, VA/Oakton), in the 500 free (5:30.90) earned Alfred’s other individual event wins.


Staniszewski also took second in the 1,650 free (19:00.51) and 200 free (2:02.38) and Behr was second in the 100 back (1:02.60). Sophomore Kelsey McRill (Solon, OH/Solon) was second in the 100 free (57.72).


AU was second in both relays: Behr, freshman Kylee Proudfit (St. Marys, PA/Elk County Catholic), Watson and McRill in the 200 medley relay (1:59.10) and junior Molly Blair (Auburn, NY/Auburn), sophomore Emma Gromelski (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) and freshmen Sydney Kelleher (Buffalo, NY/Holy Angels) and Leah Zimmerman (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua) on the 200 free relay (1:54.03).


The ASU men’s and women’s teams are in action next on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 1 p.m. at home against Pitt-Bradford.
