Men’s Basketball tops Cobleskill State in offensive shootout, 116-102
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s basketball team opened the 2013-2014 season against Cobleskill State on Saturday afternoon in the Mclane Center. The Saxons topped the visiting Fighting Tigers, 116-102.
AU went on a 17-0 run with nine minutes remaining in the first half to give them a 37-30 lead after reversing a nine point deficit. Senior forward Gerald Colas (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) paced the Saxons with 16 points in the first half. Alfred went into halftime ahead 61-40.
Alfred continued the scoring at the start of the second half, increasing their lead to 83-53 five minutes past the start of the half. Cobleskill came within seven points from the 30 point deficit with seven minutes left in regulation, but would get no closer.
For the game, both teams shot 51 percent from the field and 40 percent beyond the arc. Cobleskill held a slight, 69 percent to 68 percent, advantage from the free throw line.
Colas finished with a team-high 18 points (six rebounds). Senior guard Thomas Tsatsis (Neponsit, NY/Townsend Harris) and junior forward Jeremy Johnson (Martinsburg, WV/Martinsburg (Shepard Univ.)) both finished with 13 points apiece and freshman guards Tyler Seelman (Lorton, VA/Hayfield Secondary) and Dylan Molloy (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) both scored 12 and 11 points. Johnson pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
The Fighting Tigers were led by Brandon Smith who scored a game-high 23 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Alex Nunez scored 22 points and four other Cobleskill players scored over 10 points.
AU (1-0, 0-0 Empire 8) returns to action against Wells College on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m.
