Men’s Basketball overwhelms Wells College, 108-70
ALFRED, NY – The Alfred University men’s basketball team forced a fast-pace tempo and applied full court pressure throughout a game that earned a distinct 108-70 decision over visiting Wells College, Tuesday evening at the McLane Center.
Junior guard Ryan Mahon (Oneonta, NY/Oneonta) boosted the Saxons to a 22-point lead after hitting his fifth three-pointer as time expired at halftime. Mahon shot five for nine beyond the arc for 15 points and Alfred led 50-28 at halftime.
Alfred continued the pressing and fast pace of play as the second half resumed and the Express could not close the deficit.
A shared scoring effort contributed to Alfred’s success. All 21 players entered the game and 19 of 21 posted at least a basket. Saxon scoring leaders included senior forward Gerald Colas (Houston, TX/Cypress Ridge) with 14 points and Mahon (five for 11 beyond the arc) with 15 points. Colas, among five other teammates, each posted a team-best five rebounds.
For the game, AU shot 40 percent (37-92) from the field, 32 percent (12-37) beyond the arc, and 65 percent (22-34) from the free throw line.
Alfred (2-0, 0-0 Empire 8) resumes play on Saturday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m. against SUNY Canton.
