Alumnae sculptors showcased in Nazareth exhibit

Works by (Sarah) Kate Roberts, AU class of ’10, and Jennifer Schinzing ’04 will be featured in a four-artist exhibit opening Friday, Jan. 24 at the Nazareth College Arts Center Gallery, Rochester.

There will be an artists’ reception Jan. 24 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for “Insight: The Inner Nature of Things,” which runs through March 7, 2014.

Roberts, currently pursuing a master of fine arts degree at AU, reads: My work is based on a curiosity of the nature of time. I sue various materials to pipe, draw, construct, and weave issues of concern related to my development as a person and specifically a woman. I draw my inspiration from objects or ideas of ruin, whether in the form of a historical object, the architecture around e, or a personal relationship.” She earned her bachelor of fine arts degree with a concentration in ceramics.

Schinzing earned her bachelor of fine arts degree with a concentration in sculpture and glass. She currently works full-time at More Fire Glass Studio, Rochester, as studio coordinator and first assistant. Her glass and mixed media sculptural work has a significant avian influence. Her love of birds led her to hours of volunteer work at Wild Wings, a facility that houses permanently injured birds of prey. She is now on the facility’s board of directors.

Her artist statement reads: “The passion that I have for animals and the natural world has inspired me to learn taxidermy. The animal elements found in my work are road kill casualties or have died from natural and unpreventable deaths. By preserving them in the very small window of time between death and decay it forces people to see them in a more intimate and surreal setting. I place them in improbable situations, hopefully reminding the view of our fragile world.”

The Nazareth College Arts Center Gallery is open Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday afternoons from noon-5 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from noon-8 p.m. For additional information visit or call 585.389.5073.
