Slam poets, Grammy-nominated singer bring their talents to AU
The National Slam Champion duo Sister Outsider will share the Alfred University (AU) stage with Grammy-nominated, singer-songwriter Mary Lambert on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. in the Knight Club, Powell Campus Center.
Sister Outsider members - Dominique Christina and Denice Frohman – are recognized as the top two slam poets in the world. Their tour, which began in fall 2013, marks the first time two women of the World Poetry Slam Champions have paired up. Through spoken word they connect deeply personal stories to a diverse range of social and political issues, particularly involving race, gender, and sexuality.
Lambert is best known for writing and singing the hook (musical idea, often a short riff, passage, or phrase used in popular music to make a song appealing) on Grammy Award-nominated “Same Love” with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. She is heavily influenced by confessional folk singers and spoken word performers. Lambert is known as a brutally candid writer who deals directly in her art with past traumas including sexual abuse, addiction, and her bi-polar disorder.
The event is sponsored by Alfred University student groups Umoja, Spectrum, and the Student Activities Board.
