Wellman, Tsatsis earn Empire 8 men's basketball all-conference honors

Alfred University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dale Wellman and senior guard/forward Thomas Tsatsis (Neponsit, NY/Townsend Harris) have earned Empire 8 all-conference recognition. Wellman was named Coach of the Year and Tsatsis was named a Second Team all-star.

Tsatsis is the Saxons’ leading scorer, with 13.0 points per game, and ranks second in rebounds per game (5.1) and assists per game (2.4). His 2.68 steals per game leads the Empire 8 and ranks 10th in the nation among Division III players.

Despite playing only 21.7 minutes per contest (34th in the conference), Tsatsis ranks in the top 20 in the league in scoring, rebounds, assists and steals per game.

Wellman earned the conference’s top coaching honor in this, his sixth season at the AU helm. This year, he has guided the team to an 18-7 record, the Saxons’ best mark after 25 games since the 1988-89 squad began 18-7. This year’s team had a 9-5 record in Empire 8 play, which earned the Saxons their first-ever berth in the Empire 8 Conference championship tournament.

If AU wins the tournament, the team will get the Empire 8’s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. The Saxons are seeded fourth and play top-seeded host Hartwick at 8 p.m. Friday in one semifinal. If Alfred wins, the Saxons would play the winner of the other Friday semifinal (between second-seeded Stevens and third-seeded Nazareth) in the tournament title game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
