AU, Hillel hosting drone warfare expert
“Drone Warfare and Targeted Killing: Legal? Moral? Effective?” is the subject of a talk set for Monday, March 31 at Alfred University (AU) by Professor Amos N. Guoira, co-director of the Center for Global Justice at the University of Utah School of Law.
Guiora’s talk, sponsored by Hillel at Alfred, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on the AU campus in Olin Building, Room 302. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
Because drones have also killed civilians - so called “collateral damage” - moral and practical questions have surrounded the subject.
Guiora has written extensively on the subject of law and national security. The subject of drone warfare is among the more controversial aspects of U.S. military policy in Afghanistan, as well as in Middle Eastern countries where the United States has killed suspected terrorists, including some American citizens, with drones. One of Guiora’s major books, “Legitimate Killing,” examines this issue.
During the summer of 2014, Guiora will be a Research Fellow focused on drones and targeted killings at the University of Oxford (England), Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law and Armed Conflict (ELAC), Department of Politics And International Relations.
