Alumna endows 'Women of Influence' series for Women's Leadership Center
Pamela Lavin Bernstein ’71, a founding member of the advisory board for the Women’s Leadership Center (WLC) at Alfred University, has made a gift to the Center to endow the Women of Influence Speakers Series.
The proceeds from the endowed gift will allow the Women’s Leadership Center to bring in at least one “high-profile” speaker each year, in addition to the speakers, including alumni, who volunteer to be part of the annual series.
For Bernstein, the decision to endow the Women of Influence Speakers Series was a natural one.
"Pam has been behind the scenes as a major contributor to the WLC long before we opened our doors,” said Kathy Woughter, vice president for Student Affairs and also a WLC board member. “As a charter member of the Women's Leadership Center Advisory Board, Pam spent hours as part of a committed group of women who determined the best way to use the generous gift we'd received for the benefit of AU women students. Her fingerprints are all over the Women's - now the Judson - Leadership Center. Pam was one of the first people to come up with the idea of a signature lecture series, which quickly became known as the Women of Influence series, so it's particularly fitting that this series now bears her name. I am so glad that we can now visibly demonstrate Pam's commitment to leadership education on our campus."
“My time at Alfred University nourishes my growth as a woman,” said Bernstein, reflecting on a relationship that began when she arrived on campus as an undergraduate and has continued through today. “I am confident that the Judson Leadership Center will grow the leaders of tomorrow, and I am delighted that I am, in some way, able to influence the future of the leadership programs with this gift to support the speakers’ series.”
The speakers’ series has become a signature program for the WLC, providing valuable learning experiences for Alfred University students, and opportunities for area residents to hear notable speakers.
“Pam's gift is an endorsement for the vision begun when we opened our doors in 2006, and for the continuing mission of educating leaders for social change and equity,” said Julia Overton-Healy, director of the Judson Leadership Center at Alfred University. “I am very excited to work with Pam as we select our Women of Influence series speakers, and raise the profile of the WLC as a significant resource for women in our region.”
Recipient of an Order of Merit from the University for her volunteer service to AU, Bernstein actually completed her degree at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, but regards Alfred University as her “alma mater” and has worked tirelessly on its behalf.
The Women's Leadership Center (WLC) at Alfred University was established in 2006 and is a part of the Judson Leadership Center. The WLC provides leadership education and skills development for AU's women. Building on Alfred University’s heritage as the first truly co-educational institution in the nation, the Women’s Leadership Center offers women the opportunity to explore and fulfill their potential as leaders personally, professionally, and in their communities as they meet the challenges in a complex society.
