Schedule
You will arrive on Sunday, August 3 and depart on Wednesday, August 6.  During that time, you will be in the company of a great group of quilters and artists. You will enjoy a full day of classes on Monday and Tuesday, and a special program by Linda Luggen on Monday evening.  On Wednesday, we will be having our quilt show which is open to the public. A complete schedule of events is included below. 

Visiting Artists
We are delighted to announce that classes will be taught and special presentations made by the following visiting artists/teachers:

Classes
Three of our artists will be offering classes that will be held both Monday and Tuesday. You may opt to attend these as one-day or two-day experiences.  The fourth artist will be offering a different class each of the two days.  We believe this format gives you more options. Some of us will want to experience different artists each day, while others will choose to do additional or advanced work with the same artist on the second day, or simply use the second day to FINISH a project.  (How many classes have we gone to, taken home a bag with a half-finished project in it, and it never sees the light of day again!)

In addition to the formal classes, we will have a “Studio” class, which allows you to bring any project you wish to work on at your own pace.  You may select this option to complete a couple of UFOs.  There will be a teacher there to provide assistance if you need it.

Classes will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that some classes have additional fees for patterns, tools or other supplies. Be prepared to pay the artist these fees when you arrive for class.

Included below are brief biographies of our wonderful visiting artists along with details about the classes they will be teaching. Their contact information is included so you can reach them if you have specific questions about their work or their class(es). Please do not contact the artists for general conference information. Gyleen X. Fitzgerald

Quilt Artist, Designer, Author and Teacher - Churchville, MD

"I want children to be doers of life and not just watchers. I hope my writing inspires them to laugh and read out loud; one day it may lead to creating art."

Gyleen was born in Philadelphia, PA but grew up in Taiwan and Japan. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering at Drexel University. Those formative years in the Far East developed her love for simplistic artistry. She began needlework at the very young age of four and pursued artistic expression in drawing and quilt making. Her quilts lend color, pattern and texture to provide a contemporary essence to traditional quilting. Her writing life came much later; she started with technical reports, moved to technical instructions, and finally got the courage to do creative organized thinking. Her written works center around Haiku poetry, quilt patterns and magazine articles and of course the crème de la crème, children's books. "The Dream: A Magical Journey in Colourful Stitches" is her first children's book and it brings together the written word with the visceral comfort of quilts. As an artist she has achieved "Best Show" recognition; as a writer, her journey is just beginning.

Gyleen's Classes
Going in Circles: Very similar to the Drunkard's Path with an extra curve or two. Learn raw edge technique to achieve perfect "stress-free"curves without piecing.Experiment with different layouts to produce aunique design.Wall hanging (25" x 25") uses 16 fabrics from 4 colour groups,adapts to bed quilt without changing scale. $5 pattern fee required. Spinning Wheels: I'm sure you had plenty of days when you felt just like that. Well now you'll have something to show for your effort. This is an almost stress free workshop that uses the "Tri-Recs" tool by EZ. If you like the technique this wall hanging could grow into a beautiful lap quilt. Use your scraps or batiks or reproduction fabric; any choice will spin this wheel just fine. $5 pattern fee required.

Lark P. Goodyear

Quilt Artist and Teacher - West Kingston, RI

"I first started quilting in 1972 when my daughter, Amy, was born.  I had always sewed and made clothing but the desire to finish a quilt that had been started for my husband led me to take my first quilt classes.  It was a Sunbonnet Sue so I imagine that was the reason it was never finished!  I did complete that quilt and restored a couple of antique tops that had been given to me as well as making a couple of baby quilts for friends.  Of course I still have the four pillows I made in class to learn the quilting techniques. 

That was about the end of my quilting for about twenty years.  I moved onto painting and earned many awards in Tole and Rosemauling.  I owned an art studio and taught seminars and classes including teaching at Saint Bonaventure University.  I was honored to have three pieces of my artwork selected for the permanent collection in the Smithsonian in Washington DC.

In 1996, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and decided maybe I would try quilting again since I couldn’t see so well to paint and I couldn’t be around the chemicals.  I signed up for the quilt group at my church and Amy agreed to go with me to carry all the “stuff.”  Well, she learned to quilt and I watched.  Getting there was too tiring for me!  Once I was well again, I took up quilting full force.  Besides teaching second grade every day and hot air ballooning all summer I manage to make about twenty-five quilts each year. (I give most away.)  I teach classes at my local quilt shop and to middle school children in my district.  I have taught at quilt camps in Rhode Island and Connecticut. I belong to Quilters by the Sea and Ninnigret Quilters. Amy and my husband, Steve, are both quilters and I’m glad they don’t have the same taste in fabrics that I do!

Lark's Class
Hunters Star Quilt - one or two-day class:This project will make use of Deb Tucker’s new Rapid Fire Method, ruler and instructions. We will be making 16 blocks using the 8"- large star ruler. There will be an additional cost of $25.00 for the ruler and pattern. Please plan to buy your own ruler because it is difficult to share. There is a lot of cutting using the ruler. You should be able to get all 16 blocks finished during the class. You may come one day or both days if you want a finished quilt top when you leave. This is a fun class and you will be amazed at how easy it is to get all the points to match. You may choose the 2-color or 3-color option. It is fun playing and arranging the blocks to make many different designs. I have taught this class at quilt camp in Rhode Island and it was very successful!

Linda  Luggen

NQA Certified Judge, Author, Designer and Teacher - Cincinnati, OH

Quilt maker, quilt teacher, lecturer, designer and NQA Certified Judge, Linda Luggen has spent almost thirty years sharing her knowledge of quilts and quiltmaking.  She designs many of her own appliqué patterns. Her color sense and multi-layer techniques have led her to a new world of freedom in creative appliqué designs that she loves to share.

Linda's quilts have won awards nationally and have been published in "Lady’s Circle Patchwork Quilts" and "Great American Quilts." Her home and quilts were featured in "Romantic Homes." She has taught seminars throughout the mid-west.  At the Cincinnati Fall Flower Show at Coney Island in October 2000, she was the featured artist, displaying 20 quilts pertaining to flowers and nature.

She has served as Secretary in 1988, Vice-President and Program Coordinator in 1997-98 and President of the Ohio Valley Quilters Guild for 1998-99.  She worked as co-facility coordinator for the Sew Near To My Heart Quilt Show in Cincinnati, 2001.

Linda's Class
Ocean Waves - one or two-day class: This is an exercise in quick cutting and quick piecing, although it can be pieced by hand. This is a wonderful project to use up a lot of your scrap fabric. Choose at least 2 colors for a scheme and use many different fabrics. It teaches the importance of recognizing values and finding the right place for them.

Barbara Murak

Fiber Artist and Teacher - Getzville, NY

Barbara has been a fiber artist for over 30 years, teaching and creating works in embroidery, fabric manipulation, painted & dyed fabrics, quilting, machine embroidery, fabric sculpture, batik and shibori. She delights in the PROCESS of art, and feels an explorative nature is critical in learning new fiber skills.

Barbara has exhibited in numerous national and international juried exhibitions, and has served as juror and curator for several quilting and art shows. Her work hangs in public and private collections in 9 countries. She has recently returned to school for her Masters in Art Therapy at Nazareth College in Rochester. Barbara's Classes
Shibori Techniques - First Day Class: Explore pattern, texture and stitch through traditional & contemporary variations of the Japanese technique of shaped resist dyeing called "Shibori". Participants will learn the Japanese terminology & meanings of different techniques (ex. Arashi Shibori) while producing hand-dyed fabrics to generate a range of expressive possibilities. Participants will need a knowledge of simple running stitching to complete the class exercises. Procion MX fiber reactive dyes will be used, which instructor will provide & mix.

Shibori Techniques - Second Day Class: Further in-depth explorations of learned techniques for those returning for a second day will include Itajimi clamping and discharge shibori techniques to create black-based fabrics with contrasting patterns of light gradations.

Both classes will be shown Shibori fabrics from the instructor's collection.

Class fee: $8 includes use of Procion Dyes, dye additatives, Synthrapol, discharge supplies,one white silk scarf for dyeing, and class handouts. (Additional white silk scarves will also be available for sale.)
