APEX: Biology & Chemistry Research

At Alfred University, Biology major Rachel Pera knew that she would have the opportunity to take classes she was interested in, even if they took her outside her major. Since Rachel loves the sciences, she wanted to explore beyond biology. After taking several chemistry classes, she decided to double major and was even granted an on-campus internship through AU's Applied and Experiential learning program, APEX.

Before starting this [APEX] experience, I knew I wanted to be a veterinarian but was unsure of what path I would follow within the profession. Performing this research inspired me to pursue a more research-based path, particularly to benefit animal welfare.

Both of Rachel’s majors helped prepare her for veterinary school, but she also acquired additional experience helping out at the equestrian center. Working with animals large and small gave her some of the vital practice she’ll need to stand out as an applicant for veterinary school.

As she finishes her senior year, Rachel is helping other students understand the field she has come to learn and love. Rachel is a chemistry Supplemental Instructor, Laboratory Teaching Assistant and Tutor. She is serving as Vice President of the Chemistry Club as well.

Rachel appreciates Alfred for another reason, too. “I didn’t think I would ever play tennis again after high school,” she says, “but Alfred gave me the opportunity to be a student athlete.” Rachel has served as captain of the team for three of the four years she has played here. She even found some of her best friends while on the court. Being part of a sports team greatly shaped her experience as an AU student.

“Through hard work and dedication, my dreams became reality as Alfred University provided me with the tools to achieve my goals. Throughout my experience at Alfred, I had the opportunity to acquire a dual degree in chemistry and biology, become a NCAA DIII athlete, and be an active member in various clubs and organizations on campus.”
