College of Ceramics
The College of Ceramics is a statutory (state-assisted) college within Alfred University. Created by an act NYS legislature in 1900, the college was established to support the state’s growing ceramic industry. Today, the college continues to benefit the state through its educational, research, and community outreach activities.
Encompassing programs in science, engineering, art and design, the college is renowned for its expertise in glass and ceramics. The Inamori School of Engineering is one of only two institutions in the U.S. that offer a B.S. in Ceramic Engineering, and the only institution in the U.S. that offers degrees in glass science. The School of Art and Design’s M.F.A. programs are ranked by U.S. News and World report among the top eleven programs overall, with individual programs ranked as follows: Ceramics (#1), Glass (#2), and Sculpture (#15). The Scholes Library houses an extensive collection covering the art, science, technology, and history of ceramics and glass. The college’s focus on glass and ceramics is further expressed in the activities of the Inamori-Kyocera Fine Ceramic Museum, the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum, the Paul Vickers Gardner Glass Center, and the Center for Advanced Ceramic Technology.
The College’s academic programs extend well beyond glass and ceramic materials. The School of Art and Design offers the B.F.A. degree, the B.S. degree in art history, the M.F.A. degree in Ceramic Art, M.F.A. degree in Sculpture/Dimensional Studies, and the M.F.A. degree in Electronic Integrated Art. Alfred University is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). The Inamori School of Engineering offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Biomaterials Engineering (B.S. and M.S.), Ceramic Engineering (B.S. through Ph.D.), Glass Engineering Science (B.S. through Ph.D.), and Materials Science and Engineering (B.S. through Ph.D.).
